The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 marked the 100th anniversary of American freedom. The celebration took place in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10 and attracted over eight million visitors. Martin came to Kansas in 1857. In 1858 he began his journalistic career by purchasing the Squatter Soverign, a proslavery paper published in Atchison. He changed the name of the paper to Freedom's Champion and later to the Atchison Daily Champion, which he published until his death. Martin was governor of Kansas, 1885-1889.
